Stoma Doubled in Size and Very Tender

This topic is about a situation where someone's stoma has suddenly increased in size, which can be concerning and uncomfortable. This change might be due to a condition known as a prolapsed stoma. Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening and some helpful advice:

- The stoma has become about twice its normal size and is tender, which led to a visit to the emergency room. The doctor there suggested that the stoma might have "come loose" and advised seeing a surgeon.

- After consulting with the surgeon, it was confirmed that the stoma is prolapsed. The surgeon plans to address this issue with surgery. This procedure will also involve removing the rectal stump and repairing a hernia. The surgery is likely scheduled for the fall, allowing the patient to enjoy the summer first.

- A prolapsed stoma is a condition that can usually be corrected. It often requires only minor surgery, which is typically performed by a colorectal surgeon.
