Is it true that bags can explode on planes due to air pressure?

The topic at hand is about whether an ostomy bag might explode on an airplane due to changes in cabin air pressure. This is a common concern for those planning to fly, especially on long-haul flights. Here are some helpful insights and advice for travelers with an ostomy:

1. Ostomy bags will not explode on a plane. Many travelers have reported no issues, as aircraft cabins are pressurized, keeping both your body and the pouch in a stable pressure environment.

2. Some people might experience extra gas in their pouch during flights. To manage this:
- Consider taking an anti-gas product like Gas-X (simethicone) before boarding.
- Get up and walk around the aisle periodically to help relieve gas.

3. Always pack all your ostomy supplies, such as pouches, wafers, and accessories, in your carry-on bag. This ensures you have them on hand in case your checked luggage is lost.

4. Using a short leg bag can be beneficial:
- It reduces the need to visit the restroom during long flights or while waiting in customs lines.
- Be aware that it might trigger a private inspection by customs officers, who may want to confirm it is not contraband.

5. Regarding airport security (TSA and foreign equivalents):
- You do not need to use a special line.
- Inform the screener that you have an ostomy. Typically, they will ask you to run your hand over the pouch outside your clothing so they can test your hand for explosives.
- A visual inspection of the pouch is uncommon but has happened to some travelers. Having TSA PreCheck or a Fast Pass can help minimize such encounters.

6. Many people with colostomies or ileostomies frequently fly on routes like New Zealand to Holland, the U.S. to Australia, and trans-Atlantic flights with no pouch-related problems.
