Struggling with Ostomy Bag Leakage - Need Help!

This topic is about dealing with persistent ostomy bag leakage and the resulting skin irritation. The person experiencing these issues is looking for effective solutions to prevent leaks and manage the situation better. Here are some helpful tips and advice shared by others:

1. **Check the Wafer Template**: Ensure the hole in the wafer is not too large, as this can lead to leaks and skin irritation. It's a good idea to have a stoma nurse check the sizing for you.

2. **Skin Preparation and Cleaning**:
- Clean the area around the stoma with warm water only, avoiding soaps that contain oil.
- Use a barrier wipe or spray, like Ellise barrier spray, to protect irritated skin before applying a new appliance.

3. **Improving Adhesion of the Pouching System**:
- Warm the adhesive by rubbing the sticky side of the wafer or pouch for about 30 seconds, or use a hair dryer on low for about a minute.
- After applying, press both hands firmly over the wafer for at least one minute to ensure a secure seal.
- Consider wearing a support belt for about an hour after changing the appliance to reinforce adhesion.

4. **Barrier Rings for Leak Prevention**:
- Cera barrier rings, often branded as CeraRing, are frequently recommended for stopping leaks. Warm them in your hands or under your arm before use to make them easier to mold.
- To fit the ring, cut it once, gently stretch and mold it around the stoma, allowing a clearance of 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Press it onto the skin, then apply the wafer over the top.

5. **Product and Supplier Suggestions**: Some people find that appliances from Salts Healthcare and Coloplast adhere better. Trying a different supplier might help.

6. **Miscellaneous Tips**:
- "Pink Tape," a pink waterproof medical tape, can be added around the edges for extra security.
- Remember that occasional accidents are normal, even for experienced users. Persistence and adjustments are part of the process.
