Wax Ring/Barrier Ring… Help!

Topic Explanation
The forum discussion is about tips and tricks for applying barrier or wax rings for ileostomy care. The original poster, Rhonda, is struggling with getting the barrier ring close enough to her stoma and keeping it in place. She has an ileostomy that is still healing from surgery, with open sores around the stitches. Rhonda has been experiencing leakage and has to change her appliance frequently. She is using Hollister and Coloplast one-piece systems, stoma powder, and skin barrier pads.

Advice and Insights

1. Using a Two-Piece Appliance:
- A two-piece appliance can make it easier to gauge where to place the wafer for a better fit.
- Apply 3M Cavilon Barrier Film and let it dry completely before applying the Eakin Seal tightly against the stoma.
- Set the seal in place without pressing hard, then carefully apply the wafer and press all around to secure it.

2. Warming the Barrier Ring:
- Use 3M Cavilon swab barrier film and let it dry.
- Warm the barrier ring by placing it under an arm or between the legs for a minute before removing the plastic covers.
- Cut through one side of the ring with scissors, then gently stretch and fit it around the stoma, starting from the bottom.
- Overlapping the ends of the ring is acceptable, and lightly press with gloved fingers to seat it.

3. Using a Hair Blower:
- Heat one side of the ring with a hair blower before applying it to the skin. This can help the ring stick better and prevent it from pulling away when removing fingers.

4. Using Salts Rings:
- Salts rings are recommended for their durability. They can be folded to fit the required size and any excess can be cut off.
- Use an empty tape spool as a roller over the backing to set the ring without pulling it off.

5. Trying Different Ring Seals:
- Salts ring seals come with a soft collar that directs output forward, potentially reducing leaks. Measure the stoma diameter and order the appropriate size.

6. Using Convex Wafers:
- Convex wafers can provide a better fit and help prevent leaks. They are highly recommended for those experiencing leakage issues.

7. General Tips:
- Ensure the barrier film is completely dry before applying
