Flying Tips for Stoma Bag Users - First Trip Abroad After Colonoscopy

Flying internationally for the first time with a stoma can feel a bit daunting, but with some preparation, it can be a smooth experience. Here are some practical tips to help you get ready for your trip:

- Start your journey with an empty pouch and try to empty it again just before boarding the plane.

- Bring more supplies than you think you'll need. It's a good idea to pack at least double the number of pouches, wafers, flanges, rings, wipes, and disposal bags you would normally use for the duration of your trip.

- Split your supplies between your carry-on and checked luggage. Keep a full set in your carry-on, as ostomy items are usually exempt from airline liquid and weight limits.

- Prepare a list of overseas contacts, including customer service numbers or distributors for your ostomy product manufacturer in each country you plan to visit. Major brands like Hollister, Coloplast, ConvaTec, Dansac, and Salts have networks around the world.

- Stay hydrated during your flight, and eat and drink lightly to help reduce output and gas.

- If possible, try to limit each flight segment to about 4–5 hours, as airplane lavatories can be cramped and awkward for emptying or changing a pouch.

- Consider using flushable ostomy pouch liners, which allow you to quickly remove and flush the contents, then insert a fresh liner. This can help minimize mess in the small airplane bathrooms, though they are not suitable for septic systems.

- Plan ahead, but remember to relax and enjoy your holiday.
