Hungry Overnight!!

This topic is about managing night-time hunger for individuals with an ileostomy, especially when they experience fast ostomy output after an early dinner. The goal is to find snacks that can satisfy hunger without causing the pouch to overfill or lead to other issues. Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Consider snacks that help slow down output and thicken it:
- Plain marshmallows are a popular choice for late-night snacking.
- Ripe bananas, with some people eating at least two per day.

2. Opt for low-residue, low-volume snacks to minimize pouch filling:
- Low-sugar protein bars.
- Yogurt cups.
- Single-serve applesauce with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
- Baby-food pouches that include yogurt, oatmeal, or oat-milk pudding.

3. Try quick and easy treats that are generally well-tolerated:
- Kellogg’s Blueberry Pop-Tarts.
- Nabisco Golden Oreos with cold milk, or Double-Stuf Oreos.
- See’s Candies “Nuts & Chews” chocolates.
- Godiva chocolates.
- Blue Bunny brand “Banana Split” ice cream.
- Occasionally, Mounds candy bars.

4. Manage output overnight with these tips:
- Output may slow down while sleeping, so the pouch might fill more slowly than during the day.
- Eating low-residue foods before bed can help prevent over-filling; explore online lists and use personal trial-and-error.
- Alternatively, enjoy any snack you like but set an alarm to check and empty the pouch about three hours later if needed.

5. Be cautious with popcorn and corn:
- Standard popcorn and whole corn can cause blockages; if you choose to eat them, limit the amount or opt for easier-to-digest “heirloom” popcorn and ensure corn is well-cooked, such as in soups.

6. Consider weight goals:
- Choose snacks based on whether you aim to gain or lose weight, and remember that portion control is important even with ostomy-friendly foods.

7. Explore additional binding-food options:
- There is interest in discovering more foods that can help thicken output beyond marshmallows and bananas.
