Colonoscopy Prep for Ostomy Patients - Bag and Flange Tips

This topic is about preparing for a colonoscopy when you have an ostomy. The main question is whether you should just replace the pouch or change the entire appliance, including the flange or wafer, after completing the bowel prep. Here are some helpful points to consider:

- Consider your skin's sensitivity. If your skin doesn't handle repeated flange changes well, it might be best to leave the existing flange in place to avoid irritation. If your skin is more tolerant, a full change might be okay.

- Option 1: Leave everything on. You can keep your current pouch and flange until the procedure. The endoscopy staff can decide whether to remove or replace it afterward, and they can put on a fresh appliance while you’re still sedated.

- Option 2: Change the morning of the scope. Apply a brand-new flange and pouch before heading to the hospital. This can help minimize leaks during the procedure, and often, the staff won't need to remove it.

- Regardless of the option you choose, bring a complete spare set with you to the appointment. This includes a new flange/wafer, pouch, and any needed accessories, so the team can re-apply if removal becomes necessary.
