Hair Removal - Area Around the Stoma

This topic is about finding safe and effective ways for men with a hairy abdomen to remove hair around their stoma. The concern is that body hair might be affecting the adhesion of the ostomy pouch, and there is a need to find methods that won't irritate the sensitive skin around the stoma or risk injury. Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Electric trimming and razor combo:
- Use a good-quality electric shaver or grooming tool for the general area, and then a safety or standard razor for a closer shave farther from the stoma.
- Some recommended models include the Clio Bikini Shaver and generic battery-operated pubic-hair shavers found near shaving cream or hair-dryer aisles.

2. Physical barriers to protect the stoma while shaving:
- Use an empty cardboard toilet-roll core, shampoo-bottle cap, or similar ring to cover the stoma as a guard while shaving around it.
- The StomaGenie device can be fitted over the stoma to shield it and capture any output during shaving.

3. Tweezing or plucking:
- Use good-quality tweezers to pluck hairs immediately adjacent to the stoma. This method can slow regrowth, reducing the frequency of hair removal.

4. Precision tools for close work:
- Small precision scissors can be used right at the base of the stoma. Gently lift or tilt the stoma for better visibility.

5. Depilatory creams (hair-removal creams):
- If your skin can tolerate them, perform a patch test on the opposite side of the abdomen first. If there's no reaction after a few days, they can be used cautiously around the stoma.
- Choose formulas labeled for "sensitive skin."

6. Waxing strips:
- Nair cold-wax strips can remove hair for about four weeks and may slow regrowth over time. Always perform a patch test first.

7. Managing irritation and ingrown hairs:
- Some people experienced ingrown hairs after repeated shaving. Switching to tweezing, waxing, or trimming helped reduce this problem.
- Keep the area clean and moisturized, and consider applying a skin-barrier cream after hair removal.

8. Other or long-term option:
- Laser hair removal was suggested as a potential permanent solution, though no direct user experiences were reported in the discussion.
