Testing Ostomy Limits - Nuts, Stomas, and Unexpected Consequences

This topic is about a person with a permanent colostomy who decided to test the common advice to avoid eating nuts. They conducted a personal experiment to see how their body would react to consuming nuts, and they shared their experience and the lessons they learned. Here are some insights and advice based on their experience and the discussion that followed:

1. The Experiment:
- The person ate a mix of salted nuts and walnuts, chewed them lightly, and drank a sip of water before going to bed.
- For the next 48 hours, there was no output, gas, or pain, but the stoma swelled and prolapsed.
- After about 60 hours, a loud "pop" occurred, releasing thick stool, and the stoma returned to normal.

2. Lessons Learned:
- In the future, they plan to eat only a small handful of nuts, chew them thoroughly, and drink plenty of water.
- They are planning another test with pickles and a Payday candy bar.

3. Additional Observations:
- A week later, the stoma and skin were normal, and they tolerated other foods like a corn dog and a Chicago hot dog without issues.
- They have concerns about hernias but prefer using a support belt over surgery.

4. Advice on Risks and Blockages:
- Many people consider eating nuts a risky "Russian roulette" due to potential blockages that can lead to ER visits.
- Lack of pain doesn't mean there's no obstruction; watch for signs like no output, swelling, and prolapse.
- People with ileostomies, Crohn’s/Colitis, or multiple surgeries are at higher risk.

5. Safe-Eating Strategies:
- Start with small amounts, chew thoroughly, and drink plenty of water.
- Some people can eat nuts and popcorn without issues, but everyone's tolerance is different.
- If whole nuts are risky, try smooth peanut butter for the flavor without large particles.
- Factors like hydration, activity, and stress can affect how your body handles food.

6. Hernia Considerations:
- Hernia repair can change bowel positioning and create new issues; some prefer using support belts.
- Wearing a support belt during coughing or sneezing can prevent hernia enlargement without harming the skin.

7. Mindset and Caution:
- While some believe in trying new things to learn, others warn of the risks involved.
- Only experiment if you can access medical care quickly and are prepared for potential complications.
- Consider warning others about the risks before sharing high-risk food trials.
