Shower Issues with Stoma Guard - Water Leakage Problem

This topic is about dealing with water leakage under the wafer when using a stoma guard during showers. The person who started the discussion is experiencing water seeping under the wafer tape, which seems to irritate the skin around the stoma. They are curious if others have faced similar issues and are seeking advice.

Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Keep direct spray off the appliance:
- Some people use or create a simple "shower curtain" that wraps around the waist. This can be made with an elastic belt, a plastic sheet, and waterproof tape. Instructions for making one can be found in older forum posts from April 2016.

2. Use inexpensive household items:
- One creative solution is to cover the pouch with a 4-inch Tupperware bowl during the shower to keep it dry.

3. Consider flange extenders:
- Adding flange extenders can help prevent water from getting under the wafer and protect the skin. Water itself usually doesn't irritate the skin unless it affects the adhesive.

4. Clarify product purpose and terminology:
- A true stoma guard is a hard plastic dome designed to protect the stoma from impact. The product being used is actually a "bag cover" meant to keep the pouch area dry. Many users feel these covers add unnecessary cost and suggest focusing on a good wafer seal, using a guard only for physical protection if needed.

5. DIY alternatives:
- You can make a reusable cover from part of a Hollister pouch attached to an ostomy belt.
- Any hard-shell guard, whether commercial or homemade, can also serve as impact protection in the shower if desired.
