Hi, I wear a stoma guard in the shower but water gets under the wafer tape and I think it is irritating my skin. Anyone else having this issue?

I wear a shower curtain to keep the direct spray off. If your skin is not dry, it can cause problems.

Hi Xnine,

where did you buy the ostomy shower curtain?

When I found this web site, I didn't think its name had anything to do with actually meeting an ostomate but I later learned there were some folks who did meet and develop relationships. How good is that? That wasn't my intention. I definitely didn't want anyone to meet me. I felt broken and wasn't prepared to express those feelings. I thought it was a place where ostomates wrote about themselves, posed questions, shared thoughts, told jokes and, sometimes, just vented. I thought of it as a community of folks with similar interests and various degrees of experience. Mostly I found some of the most caring, selfless, wise and understanding people I ever imagined. I was so impressed with some of the writings; not because of their literary value but the way in which they addressed such a very complex environment. I read hundreds of exchanges and admired the way folks cared for each other. I became hopeful with my own situation and looked forward to the next day's offerings. Certainly some contributors stood out with their experience or particular skills in addressing some things but it seemed like a total effort with synergistic results. I felt blessed to have found this site. I still do.

I made it myself. Elastic belt, sheet of plastic, and water proof tape. There is a post on here on how to make it. If you look at my profile and check my posts back to April 2016 you should find it.

My understanding of a stoma guard is to provide protection to the stoma itself if you're being physical, like playing sports or working in a warehouse, etc.

I've never heard of using a stoma guard in the shower.

There is a thread on this right now with some answers. Check them out.

I like to keep everything dry by covering it with a 4 inch Tupperware  bowl

That doesn't make sense that water would irritate your skin, do you use flange extenders ?

Agreed. Water doesn't irritate... Where does that logic come from?

Re: terminology on this site.

What you really have is a bag cover. It does not protect your stoma at all. When you say guard, it might be true the cover guards against water.

(From this site, most members agree covers are a waste of time and money.)

I have a stoma guard that is similar in shape to a dome, or half dome, with a flange and stick adhesive. It's hard plastic. This will guard or protect your stoma from external hits, rubs, and environmental situations.

A lot of terms on here that will trip you up. Be careful.

On a lighter note, you can use this plastic guard in the shower to protect against bumps and grinds while entertaining a partner. Your bag cover would be useless in that situation. 😁🤦‍♂️

Guys, just make this from part of a Hollister bag and use a belt. Regards, IGGIE
