Does my bag smell?

This topic is about dealing with odor concerns when using a Hollister two-piece ostomy bag. The person sharing their experience noticed a fecal smell and is unsure if it's real or if they are just more sensitive to it. Here are some helpful tips and insights for managing such concerns:

1. A properly applied pouch with a good seal should not emit odors. If you notice a persistent smell, it might indicate a leak or seepage under the barrier.

2. Integrated pouch filters can sometimes release brief odors. If you notice a smell, it might be a sign of a seal issue that needs to be addressed.

3. For drainable pouches, make sure to thoroughly clean the tail or closing mechanism and the plastic flange every time you empty it. This helps remove any residue that could cause odors.

4. "Burping" the bag to release gas will cause a temporary odor. It's a good idea to have air freshener handy and to clean the flange afterward.

5. Consider replacing the pouch or wafer if you've been wearing it for a long time, if the filter becomes saturated, or if you notice tiny holes, possibly from pets' claws.

6. Deodorizing products can help manage odors:
- Brava Lubricating Deodorant drops (Coloplast) can reduce odor and make emptying easier.
- General deodorizing drops can be placed in the pouch, though no specific brand is mentioned.

7. Some people choose not to use deodorant drops so that any odor can serve as an early warning of a leak.

8. It's common for ostomy owners to notice faint smells before anyone else because their nose is closest to the stoma. In the early months, this can be psychological. Asking a trusted person can help confirm if others detect any odor.

9. Using personal body spray or deodorant can boost your confidence if you suspect an odor but can't confirm it.
