Stoma Protection for Driving and Gym Activities

This topic is about finding ways to protect a stoma, especially when dealing with seat belts in cars and during gym workouts. A parent is seeking a device that can keep a car seat belt from pressing on their son’s stoma and also provide protection during physical activities. Here are some suggestions and tips that might help:

1. Commercial Stoma Guards:
- Consider the "Stoma Guard" available on Amazon, which offers interchangeable pads of varying thicknesses.
- The Stomashield by Stomagear is another option, which you can find on their website.
- SiilOstomy offers stoma guards, belts, and wraps that attach with Velcro, suitable for both sports and seat belts.

2. Low-Cost DIY Seat-Belt Spacers:
- You can cut a 6-inch piece of a 7 cm-diameter pool noodle in half lengthwise and place the halves under the seat belt on either side of the stoma.
- An inexpensive foam knee pad, with the elastic removed and corners rounded, can be used. The seat belt will hold it in place, and its shape will protect the stoma.
- A folded towel, small cushion, or a trimmed sheepskin seat-belt cover with Velcro can also work. Some people keep one in each car and adjust it for different seasons.

3. Belt/Garment Positioning Tricks:
- Try sliding the lap belt under an ostomy support wrap so it sits on the waist below the pouch.
- Some support garments that might help include the Nu-Hope 6-inch-tall support belt and the Ostomy Secrets women’s support wrap, which has an hour-glass cut for a better fit under shirts.
- For workouts, consider using support bands like the Stealth Belt and Stashbandz.

4. General Notes:
- Many drivers find that a properly adjusted seat belt should not interfere with stoma output. Guards or padding are mainly for added peace of mind.
- It might be convenient to keep duplicate protectors in multiple vehicles.
