Dealing with Persistent Itching from Ostomy Tape

This topic is about dealing with persistent itching around the edges of an ostomy wafer or tape. The person experiencing this issue has been struggling with intense itching for years, even though there is no visible redness or irritation. They are seeking practical solutions to find relief. Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Consider a possible adhesive allergy:
- Try switching to different brands of wafers or bags. Some people have found that while Hollister tape causes itching, products from Convatec (like Esteem Synergy) or Coloplast baseplates do not.
- Contact manufacturers such as Hollister, Convatec, and Coloplast to request free samples for testing.
- Before using a new baseplate, patch-test it on the opposite side of your abdomen. If that area itches, you can rule out that product. Coloplast’s adhesive contains zinc, which some people find gentler.

2. Use a full-coverage skin barrier:
- Spray the entire area around the stoma with a barrier spray and let it dry completely before applying the wafer. Even a small missed spot can cause itching.
- If the built-in tape is problematic, trim it off and use hypoallergenic paper tape, Tegaderm transparent film, or Sure Seals to secure the wafer. Many insurance plans cover at least one 10-pack of Tegaderm, which costs around $10.

3. Timing and equipment change:
- Itching might indicate that it’s time to change the appliance.

4. Symptom relief options:
- Oral antihistamines like Benadryl (regular or children’s chewable) can help calm allergic itching, though they are not recommended for long-term use.
- Topical corticosteroids such as Cortisone 10 Ointment (not cream) offer waterproof, longer-lasting relief. Be sure to remove any residue before applying a new pouch, as it can affect adhesion.
- Lightly dusting with antifungal powder like Desonex can stop intermittent itching.
- General anti-itch products used for mosquito bites might provide relief.
- Cold therapy, such as applying an ice pack over the pouch or moving an ice cube around inside the bag, can offer immediate itch suppression.

5. Miscellaneous tips:
- Determine if the itching is caused by the wafer’s built-in tape or any additional tape you use.
- Factors like diet, hydration, and overall skin chemistry can temporarily increase sensitivity, so improvements in these areas might reduce itching over time.
