Irritated Skin Near Belly Button

This topic is about dealing with irritated skin near the belly button, which is caused by the tape border of an ostomy appliance. Even though there are no leaks, the skin can become red, weepy, and irritated. Here are some helpful tips and advice to manage and prevent this irritation:

1. Consider using the "crusting" technique:
- Lightly dust the irritated skin with stoma powder and tap off any excess.
- Seal the powder with a skin-prep or barrier wipe or spray, such as 3M Cavilon or a generic barrier spray.
- Allow it to dry, and repeat the powder and spray layers if necessary before applying the wafer.
- Continue this process until the skin is fully healed.

2. Apply products in the correct order:
- Use stoma powder first, let it set, and then apply the barrier spray before attaching the pouch.

3. Modify the wafer’s fabric or tape border:
- Trim away the section that irritates the skin or add small relief slits to allow the flange to flex with abdominal movements.
- This modification should not affect the main hydrocolloid seal.

4. Allow the skin to breathe:
- Occasionally lift the edge of the tape or remove the pouch during low-output times, such as after 7 p.m., and lie down for about an hour to let the skin dry.

5. Use additional adhesive or protective products if needed:
- Skin-Tac adhesive wipes or liquid can be applied after crusting for extra tackiness.
- If a yeast or fungal rash is suspected, Desonex antifungal powder can be used under the crusting layers.

6. Try cleansing or soothing soaks:
- Use Domeboro Astringent Solution packets mixed in warm water. Soak a cloth in the solution and compress the irritated skin for up to 20 minutes to help dry and soothe the area.

7. Remember that minor irritation is common:
- The abdomen tends to swell during the day, increasing tension on the wafer’s outer tape. Regular use of skin-prep products can help reduce friction and irritation.
