Big Milestone

Returning to the office after ostomy surgery is a significant milestone for anyone who has undergone this procedure. It marks a step towards regaining a sense of normalcy and routine. One person recently shared their experience of returning to work in a hybrid model, which requires at least two days in the office. After a long recovery period working remotely due to a two-hour train commute each way, they successfully completed their first day back and reported that everything went smoothly.

Here are some helpful pieces of advice and insights from others who have been through similar experiences:

1. Establishing a new routine: After a short adjustment period, commuting and working with an ostomy should start to feel like just another day.

2. Start gently and build up: Consider returning to work on light duty, such as avoiding lifting anything over 10 pounds, for a couple of weeks. This approach can help boost confidence and aid in the healing process.

3. Measure progress in small wins: Celebrate small achievements like getting through the commute, completing a workday, or maintaining previous habits. These can reinforce the idea that life with an ostomy can be similar to life before surgery.

4. Mobility aids are tools, not setbacks:
- If fatigue or balance is a concern, consider using devices like an electric scooter instead of crutches. This can be less conspicuous and help conserve energy.
- Gradual physical recovery, such as moving from a wheelchair to a cane, is common. Patience and persistence are important.

5. Don’t hesitate to share worries or frustrations: Everyone in the community has faced serious illness, and honest discussions can help others relate and offer support.
