Hollister Drainable Pouch: How to Open the Lock and Roll Closure?

This topic is about a user who is having trouble opening the Lock-and-Roll closure on Hollister drainable pouches. Despite watching instructional videos, they find it difficult to open the seal and are looking for practical tips to make the process easier. Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Pre-crease the closure before use:
- While the pouch is still clean, pinch the two stiff plastic strips together and create opposing creases that face away from each other.
- You can also try folding the tail in the middle to weaken it or squeezing the sides to form an “X” or “crab-Rangoon” shape before sealing.
- Repeat the creasing several times or refresh it just before the first empty.
- Some users prepare 5–10 new bags in advance by creasing them and storing them ready to use.

2. Use the thumb-and-forefinger “opposed squeeze” method:
- Place your thumb on one plastic lip and your forefinger on the other. Press inward and slide your fingers in opposite directions to break the seal, especially when it is stubborn or the output is sticky or thick.

3. Keep the tail clean:
- Thoroughly wipe the inside and outside of the tail after emptying, as any residual output can cause the closure to stick shut.

4. Modify or reinforce the closure:
- Cut a small V-shaped notch from the very top fold; this can let air in and help the tail open instantly.
- Use an external clip for added security. For example, the IGGIE Clip can be used after emptying by folding the tail over several times and securing it with the clip, which shortens the pouch and prevents accidental opening. Some users even glue a small magnet to the clip for extra hold.
- Some people switch to ConvaTec drainable pouches that use a separate clip instead of the Lock-and-Roll system.

5. Consider alternative products:
- Hollister representatives have mentioned a new line of pouches with an easier-to-open tail, though suppliers may still be clearing old stock.
- ConvaTec drainable pouches with traditional clips are also an option for those who find the Lock-and-Roll system challenging.

6. Find visual help:
- Search the forum for “trouble with Hollister drainable pouches” or look for “crimping” videos on YouTube, as several members have found learning the technique visually to be helpful.
