Dealing with Foam and Air in My Bag - Need Help!

This topic is about dealing with foam and excess air (or gas) in an ostomy pouch. If you're experiencing this issue, here are some helpful tips and insights to consider:

- Diet is often the main culprit for gas and foam:
1. Be mindful of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, as well as garlic and strong spices, which can create gas and foam.
2. Fizzy or carbonated drinks can introduce a lot of air into your system.
3. Keep an eye on other gas-producing foods and try to reduce their intake.

- Consider using products that help manage liquid, gas, or odor:
1. Eakin Gel packets can thicken watery output.
2. Hollister 85000 Deodorant (liquid) and Hollister M-9 drops are useful for reducing odor and gas.
3. Over-the-counter remedies like "No More Gas" or "Hostoma" liquid might also be beneficial.

- Oral remedies can be helpful:
1. Occasionally taking a Gas-X (simethicone) tablet can reduce gas.
2. A small dose of codeine, if approved by your doctor, can slow output and decrease gas, but be aware it may cause drowsiness or dependence.

- The style of your pouch can make a difference:
1. Switching between 1-piece and 2-piece systems might affect how much air stays in the pouch.
2. If stool tends to collect around the stoma due to too little air, try adding a lubricating deodorant inside the pouch. Hollister's Adapt Lubricant Deodorant can help prevent static and allow stool to slide to the bottom. Use about 1 tablespoon each time you empty the pouch.

- General tips for managing your pouch:
1. Empty the pouch before it becomes more than one-third full.
2. Burp the pouch or use vents as needed to prevent ballooning.
3. Keep the skin around the stoma clean and dry to avoid irritation and ensure the adhesive stays intact.
4. Change the wafer every 5–7 days, or as advised by your nurse, to prevent leakage and allow for skin inspection and cleaning.
