Old Surgery Wound Reopened After Sneezing and Coughing

This topic is about a situation where, two years after having ostomy surgery, a person's surgical wound reopened due to coughing and sneezing. This has led to ongoing care and attention to help the wound heal properly. Here are some helpful insights and advice for managing this situation:

1. A community nurse will visit every two days to clean and re-dress the wound until it is fully healed. This regular care is important to ensure the wound stays clean and has the best chance to close properly.

2. The latest check-up showed that the wound is not in bad condition and has been re-bandaged. This is a positive sign, but continued care is necessary.

3. It is important to avoid heavy lifting and stretching, as these activities can put additional strain on the wound. Supporting the wound with a hand when coughing or sneezing can also help prevent it from reopening.

4. To reduce the risk of the wound reopening, try to minimize triggers for coughing and sneezing. You might find it helpful to keep a reminder nearby to be cautious. Additionally, consider using medications or humidifiers to help control cough and sneeze reflexes.
