Swimming with Dolphins in Nassau with a Colostomy: Any Tips?

Swimming with dolphins sounds like an amazing adventure, and having a colostomy shouldn't stop you from enjoying it. If you're planning to take part in a swim-with-the-dolphins program in Nassau, here are some helpful tips to manage your colostomy pouching system while you're in the water:

1. Use a waterproof cover for the flange. "Sure Seal Rings," which are clear plastic adhesive ring seals made by Active Lifestyle Products Inc., are highly recommended. They help protect the flange from water and moisture when swimming or diving.

2. Start with a barrier that already provides a leak-free seal. If your current setup works well on land, it will likely perform just as well in the water.

3. Bring plenty of supplies. It's a good idea to pack at least twice the number of pouches, flanges, rings, and other supplies you think you'll need. This way, you're prepared for any unexpected changes or leaks while traveling.

4. Reinforce the edges. If you plan to stay in the water for a long time, apply waterproof tape over the barrier tape. This helps prevent the tape from peeling and keeps everything securely in place.

5. Consider the irrigation option if you have a colostomy. You might want to irrigate in the morning so you can wear a stoma cap during the day and switch to a regular pouch only at night. This can help minimize output while you're enjoying your time in the water.

6. Feel reassured. Many people with ostomies swim regularly, including during dolphin encounters, without any issues. Confidence in your usual system can make a big difference in enjoying the experience.
