How to manage ostomy gas in public? Need advice!

The topic at hand is about managing ostomy gas and noise, especially in public or school settings. This is a common concern for those living with an ostomy, like the person who shared their experience of returning to college after surviving non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and living with an ileostomy for a year. They are excited but worried about the potential embarrassment from audible gas in quiet classrooms. Here are some helpful tips and insights to manage this situation:

1. Noise-muffling techniques:
- Gently press a finger or hand over the stoma or pouch opening when you feel gas building up. This can often reduce or stop the sound.
- Consider wearing a noisy bracelet or a few bangles. You can jingle them subtly to mask any sudden noises while covering the stoma.
- Use a dedicated ostomy garment, like the Ostomysecrets Wrap, which has an inner pocket to keep the pouch flat, muffle sound, and boost your confidence.

2. Appliance features:
- Opt for pouches with a gas filter. These allow odor-free gas to vent and help reduce ballooning.
- If ballooning wakes you at night, try "burping" or emptying the pouch once. Many people find they only need to do this once per night.

3. Dietary adjustments to curb gas:
- Be mindful of foods and drinks that commonly cause gas, such as beer, carbonated drinks, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, radishes, soy products, nuts, dairy (for some), and chewing gum, which can cause you to swallow air.
- Remember that tolerance varies from person to person. Many find that gas issues decrease as they gain more experience and their system adapts.

4. Marshmallow tip and caution:
- Eating one marshmallow just before a bag change can temporarily quiet the stoma.
- Avoid eating several marshmallows, as this can thicken output, slow flow, and even produce a frothy sound later.

5. Deciding whether to disclose:
- Some suggest not announcing your ostomy to the entire class. Discreet management and confidence-boosting garments are usually enough.

6. Encouragement:
- Many long-time ileostomates note that daytime gas often lessens over time.
- An ostomy doesn't have to limit your ambitions. People have found success in various fields like modeling, writing, motivational speaking, and more.
