Smooth Security Experience During International Travel

Traveling internationally with an ostomy appliance can be a concern for many, but it doesn't have to be a stressful experience. Here's a story of someone who recently flew abroad and had a smooth time going through airport security.

- On the outbound flight, the traveler informed security about the ostomy appliance. A male officer, wearing gloves, gently patted the area and used a metal-detecting wand. The whole process was quick, taking less than two minutes.
- On the return flight to the USA, there were no additional checks, and the traveler faced no issues during the flights or the vacation.

Here are some helpful tips and insights for traveling with an ostomy:

1. Most people with an ostomy report little to no trouble at airport security. Some don't even mention their appliance at all.
2. Carrying ostomy supplies like bags, stoma covers, lubricants, and medications in your carry-on is usually straightforward. Electronics tend to get more attention than medical items.
3. If you're worried, you might want to notify the airline in advance. One traveler sent a letter to Lufthansa about a Braun pump and had no issues at various airports.
4. Security staff are becoming more familiar with ostomy equipment, making the screening process smoother than some of the horror stories from the past.
5. Keep traveling! Both international and domestic flights can be routine for those with an ostomy, often without needing extra declarations or special procedures.
