Bleeding around stoma during shower - normal or concerning?

This topic is about a person experiencing some bleeding around their ileostomy when they remove their wafer to take a shower. They have noticed this since their surgery and are curious if the stoma output might be causing it. Here are some helpful insights and advice for managing this situation:

1. Consider having a stoma or WOCN (Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse) examine the area. It might be helpful to bring a full appliance change with you. The bleeding could be due to granulomas, which are small growths, on the edge of the stoma.

2. Some common mechanical causes of bleeding include:
- The wafer opening might be cut or molded too tightly against the stoma.
- Removing the wafer too quickly can cause trauma to the skin.
- Repeated minor leakage can keep the same spot irritated.

3. After removing the wafer, let cool shower water run over the stoma to help soothe the area.

4. Use stoma powder along with a barrier, like a barrier spray, to protect the irritated skin whenever you notice bleeding or soreness.

5. Small amounts of bleeding are not unusual. It can happen due to the wafer hole, stoma dilation, or when the stoma output comes into contact with the skin.

6. If the bleeding persists or increases, it’s important to seek a professional assessment to rule out ongoing irritation or other potential issues.
