Question about emptying Coloplast pouch sideways

This topic is about using a Coloplast ostomy pouch in a horizontal position for comfort and discretion. The person currently uses Hollister products but is curious about how Coloplast pouches work, especially the mechanism that allows the pouch to be rotated for emptying. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Coloplast attachment style:
- Coloplast's two-piece systems use a locking-ring mechanism. The pouch is placed over the wafer opening, and a plastic ring is rotated to secure it. This is different from the snap-on style of Hollister or ConvaTec.
- When the locking tab is open, only the ring can rotate; the pouch itself does not spin freely while locked.
- Some people find the Coloplast ring easier to connect compared to snap-on styles.

2. Sideways wear and emptying:
- Many users successfully wear Coloplast pouches sideways and empty them without needing to rotate the pouch. The larger outlet of Coloplast pouches can make wiping easier compared to Hollister’s smaller spout.
- One user mentioned that twisting the pouch to empty it was awkward, so they prefer to empty it while it is horizontal.
- Hollister pouches can also be worn sideways, but the smaller openings might be harder to clean, especially for those with larger fingers.

3. Product comparisons and sampling:
- The feel of ConvaTec, Hollister, and Coloplast products on the skin can vary, and so can comfort and wear time. It’s a personal experience.
- It’s recommended to contact each company for free samples and try different orientations to see what works best for you.

4. Accessory suggestions:
- The Stealth Belt is an accessory that supports horizontal pouch wear and offers extra protection for those with active or outdoor lifestyles.

5. Practical tips:
- If you have an ileostomy and the output becomes too thick to exit easily, drinking juice can help thin it out, making emptying simpler.
