Reducing odor from colostomy bag?

This topic is about finding ways to reduce or neutralize the odor from a one-piece colostomy pouch with a Velcro closure. The person sharing their experience has been living with a colostomy since November 2012 and has recently increased their food intake, which has led to higher output and noticeable odor when emptying the pouch. They are looking for practical solutions to manage this issue, especially when away from home.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Commercial deodorant drops or sprays:
- Hollister M9 Odor Eliminator Drops: Use 3-4 drops in the pouch after each emptying. These are available in bottles or sprays and can be added to your regular supply orders. Some people find them very effective, though experiences may vary.
- Coloplast Brava Lubricating Odor Control Deodorant: This has a clear, pleasant scent and does not discolor the stool. You can request free samples from Coloplast and keep a small refillable bottle handy for use after each emptying.

2. Simple store-bought items:
- Mint Tic Tacs: Any flavor can help mask routine odors. They are inexpensive and easy to carry.
- Regular mouthwash: Pour a small amount into the pouch or use it when rinsing to help reduce odor.
- Uncoated aspirin (325 mg): Some people find it helpful, though this is based on personal experiences.

3. Home-mixed solutions:
- Mix 2 parts hydrogen peroxide with 1 part scented body wash. Add a small squeeze after emptying the pouch. Keep travel bottles at home, work, in the car, and in your gym bag.
- Add vinegar to the rinse water for the pouch.

4. General practices:
- Rinse the pouch with lukewarm or cold water between emptying, and add your chosen deodorizer during the rinse.
- Carry small, leak-proof bottles of any liquid deodorizer for use when you're out and about.
- Ensure that homemade additives or mints do not come into direct contact with the stoma.
