Persistent Stoma Pain - Possible Gas Build-Up?

This topic is about dealing with persistent pain around a stoma, which might be due to gas build-up or a hernia. The person experiencing this pain has been trying to figure out the cause and find relief. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who have faced similar issues:

1. The surgeon suggested the pain might be due to gas or a hernia, but since the stoma looks normal, they don't plan further investigation.

2. The skin around the stoma appeared very red during an appliance change. To address this, the person used stoma powder and barrier wipes and switched to a one-piece system to reduce pressure.

3. The pain seems to worsen after eating foods like garlic and onion, which might indicate that certain foods are causing gas.

4. There is concern about the possibility of developing a hernia shortly after ostomy surgery.

Advice and insights from others include:

1. Consider getting formally assessed for a parastomal hernia, as similar pain in others was related to a hernia.

2. Consult a stoma nurse for a detailed post-operative assessment and management advice.

3. For managing gas:
- Some find relief by manually moving the stoma muscle with a finger and using a stoma plug to allow gas to escape during the day.
- At night, using an "irridrain" sleeve or bag can help, as an inflated bag by morning indicates gas build-up.
- Always ensure fingernails are trimmed and seek professional guidance before trying digital manipulation or using plugs.

4. If a hernia is confirmed and causing pain, a surgical "stoma revision" might be an option. This involves removing the hernia and reforming the stoma, usually requiring a short hospital stay. Mesh reinforcement can be added to prevent future hernias, especially for those who frequently lift or bend.

5. It's important to advocate for yourself. Persistent pain should not be ignored, and you should push for proper investigation and treatment.
