Swinging after surgery - Seeking advice

Returning to activities like golf and surf-fishing after having an end colostomy can be a bit daunting, especially when you're worried about potential complications like hernias. Here's some friendly advice and insights from others who have been in similar situations:

1. Medical clearance and gradual return:
- Some people have been cleared by their surgeons to play golf as soon as 10 days after surgery without any issues.
- It's often recommended to start slowly, perhaps with small buckets at the driving range, then move on to nine holes before tackling a full round.

2. Use common-sense body mechanics:
- Warming up, stretching, and doing light core-strengthening exercises can help protect your back and abdomen.
- Try to adopt a smoother, more controlled swing. Let the club do the work for you. Interestingly, major surgery can sometimes lead to a better tempo in your swing.

3. Protect the stoma and pouch:
- Make sure your pouch is securely in place. You might use extra tape or elastic barrier strips for added security.
- Some people find confidence in using a Basko support belt with a rigid stoma protector to prevent any nudging during the swing.
- Strengthening your abdominal muscles and wearing support can help reduce the risk of a hernia.

4. Equipment and lifting tips:
- Be cautious when lifting heavy items like a golf bag from the car trunk.
- Using a golf cart can help extend your playing time and reduce physical strain. Some even use carts with weather covers and heaters for added comfort.

5. Confidence and mindset:
- Many players with ileostomies, colostomies, and even those with a urostomy at age 85 report playing 18 holes regularly, sometimes even better than before their surgery.
- You might find that your distances are shorter, but focusing on course management can help you enjoy the game fully.
- Mishaps are rare. One person mentioned only experiencing a single "blowout" while playing Wii Golf, which was due to poor pouch adhesion.

6. Surf-fishing parallel:
- If you decide to return to surf-fishing, the same gradual, common-sense approach and attention to lifting apply.
