Excessive Stoma Mucus - Seeking Advice

Managing excessive mucus in a long-term urostomy can be a bit challenging, especially when it starts to interfere with the function of your urostomy system. If you've noticed a significant increase in mucus production, you're not alone, and there are some strategies that might help you manage it better.

Here are some suggestions and insights from others who have been in similar situations:

1. **Cranberry Products**
- Many people with long-term urostomies have found that drinking a glass of cranberry juice in the morning and at night, or taking cranberry-extract tablets, can help reduce mucus production. These products are also known to help prevent urinary infections.

2. **In-Pouch Rinse**
- Some have tried mixing baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) with water and pouring it into the pouch after emptying. This can help reduce mucus related to mucositis. Keep in mind, this method is only practical if your pouch stays attached after rinsing.

3. **General Observation**
- It's important to remember that mucus output can vary from day to day. This fluctuation is often the body's natural way of protecting the stoma. Understanding this variability can help ease concerns when you notice an increase in mucus production.

These tips might not work for everyone, but they could be worth trying to see if they make a difference for you.
