Looking for Advice on Ostomy Pouches - Odor and Durability Issues

This topic is about a person in New Zealand who has been using the Eakin Pelican Convex Drainable pouch for their colostomy. They have recently started experiencing issues with odor and shorter wear-time, and are seeking advice on alternatives. Here are some insights and suggestions that might help:

- If you notice changes in odor or wear-time, first check for any physical changes like hernias, weight gain, or changes in your skin-care routine. If everything seems the same, the pouch or filter might be the issue.

- Consider trying different brands and request free samples from manufacturers or supply companies. This is a common practice in places like the USA and UK, and it might be worth trying in New Zealand.

- Odor often comes from a compromised filter. Look for signs like discoloration on the filter as an early warning. Some people change only the pouch section daily or every other day to keep the filter fresh while leaving the wafer in place.

- For pouch deodorants, some effective options include Na’Scent (liquid) and M9 drops (Hollister). Adding a few drops to every new pouch can help prevent odor.

- Regarding pouch and brand experiences:
1. Coloplast SenSura Mio one-piece is noted for its softer fabric, gentler adhesive, and redesigned high-capacity filter that has helped eliminate odor problems for some users.
2. Hollister convex drainable pouches have had reports of premature filter staining and odor after a filter update, which has been referred to their quality assurance.
3. Another user found the new Pelican convex drainable samples very comfortable, with 3 pouches lasting 11 days without odor when used with Eakin Slim Seals.
4. Salts brand is often recommended by some UK hospitals, though it may not be superior.

- For wear-time, the typical lifespan of a wafer is about 3 days. Extending beyond 4 days can increase the risk of erosion. If the wafer edges lift prematurely, you can temporarily secure them with waterproof tape until you can do a full change.

- Eakin Slim Seals are praised for protecting the skin around the stoma and extending wear-time.

- Pelican/Eakin is known for their quick phone response, friendly staff, and efficient delivery, at least in the UK. They sometimes include small "thank-you" items, which is a nice touch.
