Using Aloe Vera for Skin Issues Around a Stoma

This topic is about using fresh Aloe Vera to soothe irritated skin around a stoma. If you're dealing with sore skin in this area, Aloe Vera might be a natural remedy to consider. Here are some helpful tips and advice on how to use it effectively:

1. Timing: It's generally recommended to keep any topical treatment on for just a few minutes, around 5 minutes, or until the skin has absorbed it and is dry.

2. Managing Output:
- To prevent any mess while treating the area, cover the stoma with small squares of paper towel, toilet tissue, or gauze to catch any output.
- Keep several pieces ready so you can quickly replace them if they become soiled.

3. Applying Fresh Aloe Vera:
- Wait until your stoma output slows or stops, then remove the pouch.
- Gently cleanse the irritated skin with warm water only, avoiding soap.
- Pat the area completely dry.
- Slice open a fresh Aloe Vera leaf and apply the gel side directly to the affected skin.
- Allow the gel to air-dry without rinsing it off.
- Once dry, it should not interfere with the adhesion of your wafer or tape, so you can then apply your pouching system.

4. Product Choice: It's best to use gel straight from a live Aloe Vera plant. Commercial bottled Aloe Vera juice or gel is not recommended for this purpose.

5. Historical Insight: Fresh Aloe Vera has been used for a long time as a natural remedy for wound healing. For peristomal skin, it should be applied briefly and allowed to dry before re-pouching.
