Need help with acid erosion around stoma

This topic is about finding ways to protect the skin around a stoma from acid erosion, especially when using a Coloplast convex baseplate. The person experiencing this issue describes their skin as red, raw, lightly bleeding, and extremely painful, similar to having salt in a wound. They are seeking advice on how to protect and heal their skin.

Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Crusting Method for Healing Irritated Skin:
- Clean the area with cool water and let it dry completely. Using a small fan can help speed up the drying process.
- Dust the irritated skin with ostomy powder, such as Convatec Stomahesive powder or karaya powder.
- Seal the powder with a skin-barrier wipe or spray, like 3M Cavilon, and let it dry.
- Repeat the powder and barrier application a second time, then apply the wafer. Warming the wafer by hand or lying down for 5 minutes can improve adhesion.
- Change the pouch daily and gently clean the area with a Q-tip or rolled tissue to keep the skin free of debris.

2. Antacid Approach:
- After cleaning and drying the skin, dab liquid Mylanta on the sore area, allow it to dry, and then lock it in with a wipe-on or spray-on barrier before applying the wafer.
- In extreme cases, a prescription topical medication might be recommended.

3. Product/Wafer Changes to Reduce Exposed Skin:
- Consider switching to moldable wafers (Convatec) or precut wafers for a closer seal.
- Some people have found better results by switching from Coloplast to Hollister appliances.
- Using a two-piece Convatec system allows for pouch removal and frequent skin checks without disturbing the wafer.

4. Additional Healing Aids:
- Apply Stomahesive paste (Convatec) around the wafer opening, or mix Stomahesive powder with a drop of water to create a paste for targeted treatment.
- Medical-grade Manuka honey is suggested by some for its wound-healing properties.

These suggestions aim to help manage and heal the skin around the stoma, providing relief from the painful symptoms described.
