Tips for Traveling with Double Ostomies and UTIs?

This topic is about managing urinary tract infections (UTIs) for people who have both an ileostomy and an ileal conduit (urostomy), especially when flying. The person sharing their experience has dealt with UTIs after air travel due to dehydration and urine reflux into the urostomy pouch. They have avoided flying for several years and are looking for advice to travel without triggering UTIs. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Fly at low-output times
- Book flights in the early morning when the ileostomy is less active.
- Eat lightly before and during the flight to reduce output.

2. Hydration and beverage safety
- Stay well-hydrated before and during flights, as dehydration can lead to UTIs.
- Avoid drinking water and ice provided by the airline, as the supply tanks might contain bacteria.
- Opt for sealed cans of drinks like cranberry juice, apple juice, or soda, or choose factory-sealed bottles.
- Bring empty bottles through security and fill them at airport fountains or buy sealed water after passing through security.

3. Carry-on supplies
- Pack at least twice the amount of ostomy and urostomy supplies you think you'll need in your carry-on to avoid issues if your checked luggage is delayed or lost.
- Include extra pouches, baseplates, nighttime drainage tubing, irrigation/flushing accessories, and cranberry extract and D-mannose tablets.

4. Security screening
- Inform TSA officers in advance that you have ostomy appliances to help minimize delays or unnecessary pat-downs.

5. In-flight pouch management
- If possible, flush the urostomy pouch in the lavatory during longer flights to reduce the risk of reflux.
- Consider using a small bedside-style drainage bag for long flights if the airline seat layout and privacy allow.

The products and supplements mentioned include cranberry-extract capsules and D-mannose powder or tablets, though no specific brands are named.
