Balancing Irrigation Practices While Traveling in Mexico

Balancing irrigation practices while traveling, especially to a place like a Mexican resort, can be a bit of a puzzle. If you're considering starting colostomy irrigation and are wondering how to manage it while on vacation, here are some helpful tips and insights:

- Water choice: It's often recommended to use bottled water instead of resort tap water for irrigation. However, be cautious as some bottled water brands might come from the same local sources as tap water. Opt for reputable brands to ensure safety.

- Timing your routine: Try to irrigate just before you leave for your trip. Many people find they can comfortably go 24 to 36 hours, and some even up to 48 hours, between irrigation sessions. This timing can give you plenty of time to reach your destination before needing to irrigate again.

- Equipment options for travel:
- Pressurized irrigation systems can be very convenient as they eliminate the need to hang a gravity bag.
- A commercial option is the Braun Irypump (formerly known as Braun IrriDrain), and more details can be found on their website.
- For a DIY alternative, you can convert a small garden sprayer into a pressurized reservoir and attach a Coloplast irrigation cone with hand-held flow control. This setup is compact, allowing you to pack other items inside when not in use.

- In-transit irrigation: Consider using a portable, floor-standing pressurized setup. This allows you to irrigate in airplane restrooms or airport lounges during long, multi-leg flights.

- General encouragement: Don't let having a stoma limit your travel plans. With a bit of preparation, most people find that managing irrigation while on vacation is quite doable.
