Comfortable Bike Seats After Ileo-anal Procto-colectomy Surgery

This topic is about finding a comfortable bicycle seat for someone who has undergone an ileo-anal proctocolectomy, a surgery where the rectum and anus are removed. After this procedure, sitting on a regular bicycle seat can be quite uncomfortable, as it feels like the tailbone is pressing directly on the seat post. Gel seat covers and padded cycling shorts offer only limited relief. The goal is to find a specially designed bicycle seat that can significantly reduce or eliminate this discomfort.

Here are some suggestions and insights that might help:

1. Consider air-cushion technology. Some people have found relief using an "air seat" designed for motorcycles, which is said to double riding comfort. Similar air-filled cushions or membrane saddles made for bicycles might be worth trying.

2. Regular city or commuter saddles might work. One person was able to resume daily 20-mile bicycle commutes using a standard city bike seat after an adjustment period. They recommend allowing at least six months of healing before riding, based on their surgeon’s advice.

3. Look into new ergonomic or custom saddles. A long-term ileostomate who experienced chronic saddle pain suggested exploring the latest pressure-relief bicycle seats. If possible, investing in a custom-made saddle that avoids pressure on the former anal area could be beneficial.
