Traveling with an ostomy can be a bit daunting, but with some preparation, you can make your journey much more comfortable and stress-free. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when you're on the go:
- Always have an emergency change-out kit with you. This is your safety net for unexpected leaks or full pouches when you're away from home.
- If you're flying, pack a backpack with extra pouching supplies, underwear, a T-shirt, and pants. This ensures you're ready for any situation.
- Bring several sheets of toilet paper that you've pre-rolled and folded five times. Public restroom paper can be thin or even missing, and having your own can speed up the process.
- Carry a TSA-approved 3 oz/90 ml bottle of baby oil in a zip-lock bag. It's an inexpensive pouch lubricant that can make a big difference.
- Keep extra clothing handy. Many people find it useful to have a full change of clothes, or at least underwear and trousers, in their carry-on or day bag.
- Include cleaning aids in your kit. A small bottle of hand sanitizer, wet wipes, or handi-wipes, and two bottles of water can help when thick output makes emptying difficult.
- Prepare ready-to-go “change kits” in Ziploc bags. Each should contain a precut wafer, pouch, disposable plastic bag, wipes, and any accessories. Store these kits in your car, handbag, workplace, or other frequent locations.
- If you find yourself in a long restroom queue, you can discreetly release the pouch into a spare plastic bag, tie it off, wipe your hands, and discard it at the next available receptacle.
- Quality toilet paper is important. Carry small stacks of Quilted Cottonelle or similar brands. Folding it three times prevents seepage and fits easily in a pocket.
- Use a lightweight backpack as your carry-on. It keeps your hands free and holds your supplies securely.
- A 3 oz bottle of baby oil is a popular, low-cost lubricant that meets airline liquid limits.
- Prioritize your personal comfort. If your accommodation has limited bathrooms, consider alternative lodging or day trips to reduce stress.
By following these tips, you can travel with more confidence and enjoy your journey with peace of mind.
