Best Ostomy Products for a New, Larger Stoma?

The topic is about finding the right ostomy appliance after having an ileostomy revision. The person has returned home with a larger, well-protruding stoma and a tender surgical site, making their previous rigid two-piece appliance uncomfortable. They are seeking advice on softer, more suitable brands and styles that can accommodate the increased stoma size.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights:

1. Try multiple samples before committing to a new appliance. Many suppliers, such as Coloplast, Hollister, and Marlen, offer free samples. It's a good idea to order a variety and experiment to find what works best.

2. Consider one-piece, flexible options:
- Coloplast SenSura Mio one-piece pouch has been reported to provide reliable wear for years with just a barrier wipe for skin prep.
- Marlen One-Piece Convex Mini Max Opaque Drainable Bag with a filter is favored for larger stomas.

3. Two-piece systems can still be an option if the wafer is soft. The Hollister system provided in the hospital was comfortable for the person in question.

4. Accessory combinations that have helped others include:
- Eakin Cohesive Barrier Rings to improve the seal.
- Coloplast Brava Elastic Barrier Strips for added edge security.
- Using adhesive spray along with adhesive-remover wipes for gentle application and removal.
- Skin prep/barrier wipes and stoma powder can be used as needed to protect irritated skin.

5. Be aware that the stoma is likely to shrink over the first six weeks and reach its final size by about three months. At that point, pre-cut openings may become feasible again.

6. A general principle to keep in mind is "less is more." Keep your routine simple unless extra products are truly needed for a better seal or skin protection.
