Managing High Output from an Ileostomy

Living with a new ileostomy can be quite an adjustment, especially when dealing with high and inconsistent output. This can be exhausting and affect your mood, but there are ways to manage it better. Here are some tips and insights that might help:

1. Medication and Clinical Support
- Some people have found relief by increasing their Imodium dosage at night, but it's important to get professional approval from your surgeon or ostomy nurse first.
- Discuss with your healthcare provider about the possibility of using specialized "high-output" ostomy pouches.

2. Thickening and Slowing Output with Food
- Foods like pretzel rods and applesauce can help thicken the output to a more manageable consistency.
- Other foods that might help include bananas, marshmallows, pasta, and potatoes.
- Make sure to chew your food thoroughly to aid digestion and reduce liquid output.

3. Fiber Supplements
- Metamucil (psyllium fiber) can be effective in thickening output. Start with 1 tablespoon in 4 oz (about 120 ml) of water and gradually increase to 3 tablespoons. Use less water than you would for constipation.
- If you're in the UK and find it hard to get Metamucil, consider ordering it online, as local psyllium husk products might differ.

4. Reference Materials
- There is an ostomy food chart available that lists items known to reduce diarrhea and high output. You can find it in a previous discussion online.

5. Hydration
- It's crucial to maintain your fluid balance. Oral rehydration drinks like Gatorade or Pedialyte can help replace electrolytes lost through high output.

6. Routine Adjustments
- Try to avoid eating or drinking about three hours before bedtime to reduce the need for nighttime pouch emptying.

7. Expectations
- Remember that high output often settles over time as your small intestine adapts to the changes.

These tips can help you manage your ileostomy output more effectively, making daily life a bit easier.
