Can a Stoma Change Color from Constant Wafer Use?

The topic at hand is about skin discoloration around the stoma, which might occur due to the constant use of an ostomy wafer. The main concern is whether this constant coverage can lead to changes in the color of the stoma or the skin surrounding it.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

- A healthy stoma should always appear pink to red. Discoloration typically affects the skin around the stoma, known as the peristomal skin.

- One common cause of discoloration is skin stripping when removing the wafer. To prevent this:
1. Allow any liquid skin prep to dry completely before applying the wafer.
2. Use an adhesive remover wipe or spray while gently peeling the wafer away from the skin.

- Another cause could be a mild allergic reaction to the barrier material. If you suspect this:
1. Consider trying a different brand or product line to see if the skin tone improves.

- Wearing the barrier for too long can also lead to issues, as it might allow output to seep underneath:
1. Check the back of the removed wafer. If the hydrocolloid is worn away and only a thin plastic layer remains, consider reducing the wear time by 1–2 days or adding extra protection.
2. Options for extra protection include:
- Adapt barrier ring
- Eakin Cohesive ring
- Stomahesive paste

- Using a barrier ring with either a 1-piece or 2-piece system can:
1. Prevent output from coming into contact with the skin, reducing the risk of burns and future discoloration.
2. Potentially extend the wear time of the wafer (for example, from 4 days to 7 days) once the skin has healed.

- After the skin heals, any remaining dark ring may look like a scar but should not worsen if the skin is adequately protected.
