Using Eakin Seals or Hollister Adapt Flat barrier rings for a flat stoma

This topic is about a clever way to modify Eakin Seals or Hollister Adapt Flat Barrier Rings to ensure a leak-free experience for those with a flat stoma. The person sharing this method has successfully used it for nine years without any leaks, despite suggestions from clinicians to switch to a different product. Here's how you can try this technique and some additional tips:

- Start by taking one barrier ring and cutting it into three equal pieces.
- Roll each piece between your palms until it forms a "worm" about 3½ inches (9 cm) long.
- Shape each worm into a circle approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.
- Flatten the circle to about 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) thick.
- Apply 3M Cavilon barrier film to your skin, then place the flattened ring around your stoma before applying the wafer.

This method not only triples the number of seals you get from each box (turning 50 rings into 150 seals) but also has proven to be leak-free for nearly nine years. The person who shared this method is also interested in discussing the best ways to store the pre-cut pieces for future use.

Additional tips and insights from others include:

1. Use a protractor template marked at 120°, 240°, and 360° to ensure each ring is cut into perfectly equal thirds.
2. Some members find the instructions clear and plan to try this technique to avoid wasting thick rings that prevent the flange from fitting snugly.
3. Flattening the rolled "worm" after placing it around the stoma helps prevent small bits from dislodging and falling into the pouch.
4. Hollister Adapt barrier rings are noted for being very sticky and moldable, but they have a shorter shelf life, so it's important to check the packaging dates.
5. Eakin Slims can also be modified in the same way; cutting them into equal thirds and flattening them works just as well as with standard-thickness Eakin or Adapt rings.
