Swollen Stoma - Home Remedies & Prevention Tips

This topic is about dealing with a swollen stoma, which can happen after a colostomy. The person sharing their experience found some home remedies helpful in reducing the swelling and also shared tips to prevent it from happening again. Here’s what they did and what others have suggested:

- To reduce swelling, they soaked in a warm bath for 15–20 minutes.
- They applied a heating pad to their abdomen.
- They sprinkled a small amount of table sugar directly on the stoma, which helped draw out fluid and shrink the tissue.
- They emphasized that these steps worked for them but might not work for everyone and should not replace professional medical advice.

For preventing future swelling or blockages, they advised:

1. Chew your food completely before swallowing. This helps in breaking down the food, reducing the risk of blockages, and can also make you feel fuller.
2. Some people suggest chewing each mouthful 12 times to ensure thorough breakdown.
3. The table-sugar method was found interesting by several people, who plan to remember it for emergencies.
4. If you have a high-output ileostomy, soaking without a pouch might be challenging. It’s important to adapt the bath tip according to your individual needs and output levels.
