I have an ileostomy, so other people that have one will know exactly what I'm talking about when I say "that awful smell!" I'm not saying that people with colostomies don't get a stink, but I am yet to smell anything as bad as what comes out of bag! The main culprits of "The worst smelling output"-for me, are; fish, too many iron tablets, sausages, eggs, and other things like garlic and onions (as well as producing vast amount of wind!) I've tried so many deodorisers and mint drops eating less of these foods and even drinking peppermint water after eating these foods, the only problem is, I can never shift the smell! I've even tried the output thickeners but they just made it worse! Everyone here will know exactly what I'm talking about! Especially people with ileostomies, I get teased by my family for stinking out the whole house when I use the toilet! I would love people to give me any more ideas whether it's stuff I should eat or stuff that I can put in my bag when I change it, I'm open to any ideas just to help mask the awful smell, I'm hopefully going to Uni this time next year, and I don't want to have to pay extra for my own bathroom, but obviously I don't want to stink people out all the time! Please give me any ideas or things that have worked for you!!

Hi there Dixiechick, wow, 30 years with an ostomy has got my curiosity going, and I would like to know how much the ostomy products have changed over that period of time. Welcome, Ed.

Hi I have an ileostomy and boy does it SMELL at time's! But no differen't to anyone else as we are all human! Anyway I have been using a cap full of Listerine Mouthwash when It get's smelly and it has worked wonder's 4 me!! Hope this may help you too? Dont let it stress you though as everyone else has said it doesn't matter if it come's out your butt or your BAG!!!!!!! Have a wonderfuly day!!

I take part in these forums almost every day. They and the people that contribute to them have made all the difference in my having the courage to live a normal life with an ileostomy. The people here are marvelous and come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Hearing what others have lived through has really helped me put my own experience in perspective.   Personally i don't give a shit (pun intended!) if it smells, it is a part of life for everyone not just us ostomates (i have ileostomy). and i agree with a lot of people on here i have fam members that are intact that smell worse than me that includes my daughter that complains about mine!
