Rice Cakes for Ostomates: Safe or Risky?

Some of the posts on here are painful to read with their spelling/punctuation, even difficult to follow and understand. 

There isn't a set list, but they do have a list of things to avoid with an ileostomy. Some examples are raw fruits and vegetables. Therefore, the vegetables should be cooked. No skins, seeds, or nuts. Medications should not be coated, in capsules, or gel caps.

As far as the food, I know some can eat that stuff and they are lucky. LOL, I myself can't eat much of anything.

I know the basic stuff. No seeds, nuts etc. I learned about gel caps the hard way. My stoma kept spitting them out. LOL I just wish that everyone with an ileostomy was more similar then different. I know everyone has things they can and can't tolerate that is what makes it so hard and why I am always asking questions about certain foods. I need to hear others' feedback to how they handled certain things so I can get some kind of idea about how I might proceed. I am learning that I have to try things for myself and see. But at the risk of another blockage that is a scary way of doing things. I had a very unpleasant experience with a blockage back at the very end of January. I don't want to repeat that ever again. So I am cautious. Very cautious. Very afraid sometimes too.

I understand more than you know. And what helps others clear a blockage is different for each of us. We are all different. Lol, I am so far off the mark of anything that even resembles normal for ileostomy. Doctors scratch their heads, get wide eyes, and always say that's not normal. Lol. Just take it slow; it's the best advice I can give. Take a couple of bites, or like the rice cakes, have one or two and see what happens and how it comes out of your stoma. Then you will know what caused your blockage.

I am not sure what caused my blockage because they didn't have to cut me open. But I think it might have been a combo I had of white rice, cheese sauce and broccoli. That is what I think caused it. It was the day after I had that. In the night I woke up vomiting and continued to vomit through the next day. I got severely dehydrated. I was very sick. It was so scary. I will never eat that combo of foods again. I don't eat rice anymore and really don't eat broccoli much anymore either. Even though it was cooked broccoli I was mixing with the rice and cheese sauce. It used to be a favorite food of mine pre-ostomy. 

I don't blame you for the rice... I can't do rice either. I can't chew it down. I had a blockage from noodles... I chewed like crazy, I ate it super slow, and it was a toddler-sized portion, but I still got one. My stoma did not like that type of noodle, lol.

I munch white, brown and fried rice, rice cakes, and Rice a Roni (San Francisco treat!)

Also pizza, chicken wings, and an occasional orphan cashew (chewed real well).

That reminds me of the couscous incident. I tried couscous and the little beads all came out in my ostomy bag. I guess my stoma showed me who is boss. And I go by the rule of thumb: if it comes out like that, then it can get stuck in there too. So, I don't eat couscous anymore.

Instead of rice cakes, I got rice chips. Or as my diet app calls them, rice crisps. I got BBQ, cheddar, and ranch. I tried 2 and it went well, so I tried 8 chips, which is half a serving. It went okay. So, I think I am going to be okay with the rice chips. They are only 4 grams of fat per serving, so that isn't too bad for chips.
