I go in for lunch. Go back to the shop which is in the backyard. I sit for 3 minutes and feel a wet shirt. I look down and yes, major leak. I am putting on my coat when a customer comes in. I turn my back and put the coat on. Tell him the other person will help him. Go into the house, take off everything, and put it in the washer. Get cleaned up. Wait for it to quit flowing and back on. What a mess. No sign of it plugging under the seal. That was the kind of day it was. Hoping it will be better today. I am constantly checking my shirt now.

Some days are like that! Great to laugh about them! Maybe after the fact anyway!
It is uphill from there!

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll discuss irrigation with my doctor. I'm sure it would be down the road. My output is still very liquid. It's all so unpredictable at 6 weeks post-op. I have such a fear of constipation as I struggled with this forever. I used a fiber source to thicken the stool but it hasn't helped very much. I guess I will continue to be positive but it is a bit of a pain. This website is great and everyone is so informative. Cheryl

It's something that happens unfortunately, but you bite the bullet and do what you have to do. It can be embarrassing but out of our control, and don't feel bad about it.   ..mtnman

You recovered nicely, and that is all that really matters. Thank you for sharing; it gives us all courage.

Hello Daanders.

Thanks for sharing the practicalities of your experience. If this happened to me, it would be just the sort of thing that I would write a rhyme about to deal with the emotional side of such a happening.

Unfortunately, you don't give much of  description of how you 'felt' or what you 'thought' whilst it was taking place, or what it was like for you when it was all over and you were able to look back to contemplate your 'achievement'. I would not want to 'guess' at your feelings, but if you would like to reconsider the incident and recall (for us) what emotions were triggered at each stage, then I would consider it a priviledge to try to capture the storyline within a rhyme.

Best wishes

Well, I was embarrassed and ashamed. But I have no control over that. I had a bit of a breakdown, relaxed, and then went back to work. Believe me, I am continually checking my clothing. It was so fast and so much.

I have had a couple of accidents at home when I would go to change my bag. It is frustrating, but we just have to bite the bullet and clean it up. No one is going to do it for us. Best wishes and stay safe.

Hello Daanders.

Thank you again for your post and for sharing your experience.

I have penned a few verses to try to capture your story and I hope you enjoy it.

Best wishes

A ‘NORMAL’ DAY ?

It started as a ‘normal’ day
with working in my ‘normal’ way,
until I had my ‘normal’ break
and took my ‘normal’ food intake.

Upon returning to my work,
my day would turn from bright to mirk,
as I discovered that the wet
beneath my shirt was not from sweat.

I was embarrassed and ashamed
that my stoma, now untamed,
had broken free from its constraint
to land upon my shirt and taint.

I was surprised and could not speak,
for I had sprung a major leak
and there was nothing left to do,
but exit work to clean up poo.

There was no way I would be seen
back at work ‘till I was clean,
then, I did what I needed so,
back to work I then could go.

As I am sure you all might guess,
when we are in this shitty mess
it is not easy to stay calm
and greet people with ‘normal’ charm.

This was a day I found quite hard
because it caught me off my guard,
but now it’s done and, in my past,
the lessons learned will surely last.

With all this wisdom we have shared
the next time I will be prepared
and, if there are more incidents
I will have more confidence.

It is surely me that should be thanking you for sharing your predicament so I could squeeze from it a verse or two.

Best wishes

I hope your days are better.

I had one major leak, of course at work. We decided to try a new adhesive, which went on nice and smooth, or so I thought. I changed everything on a Thursday night (I usually change it every Sunday/Thursday). On Friday at the office, between patients, I sat down in the office and "caught a whiff" and went to the bathroom to check out my equipment; all was not good. Leaking out of all sides!

I asked one of the nurses to help me change my setup. When I checked my handy dandy backpack for supplies: new clothes check, new bag check, adhesive remover check, new adhesive check, new appliance negative.

Plan B: spray some cologne, empty the bag, and wrap an ACE or two around my waist and off I went. Take-home lesson: don't be absent-minded when packing your emergency bag.

My nurse and I still laugh about it, and she checks my bag now... Thank God for nurses!

Best
