I have difficulty absorbing enough iron. I get an infusion every four or so months. Does anyone have a tried and true method for taking in iron? I have an ileostomy. (I lost my entire colon and then 12 more feet of small intestine to cancer.)

As crazy as this sounds, whenever I am/was iron deficient, I would eat Shreddies cereal for breakfast, lunch, or as a snack. It was an easy (and delicious) way for me to increase my iron levels.

I’ve only been on this site a little bit, I hardly know how to navigate it, LOL! I just want to say that everyone seems so kind and supportive to each of the members and it’s not only helpful, it makes me happy that there really are so many nice people in this world that can sometimes feel so bleak and cold. I didn’t even know about this site until I found it by accident. I think the hospital staff should bring it to their patients’ attention. Thanks to all, even if you’re just listening!

I take an iron supplement but also take vitamin C to help absorb the iron. Also, I take Ferrous Gluconate (the iron supplement) instead of Ferrous Sulfate because my gastroenterologist told me that I would not be able to absorb the Ferrous Sulfate as easily having an ileostomy. Hope this info helps.
