Instead of emptying my pouch (Convatec Natura 2 piece), there are times it would be convenient to just change the pouch. So what does one do with the dirty pouch?

If you have an ileo, you have to empty the ileostomy bag all day, so it's a constant emptying throughout the day. When you empty it, use a bit of wash to rinse it out. Use lubricant deodorant.

Hi Hatlady and all,

I've had my ostomy for over 50 years, since I was a kid, and didn't think I really needed to be part of the ostomy site. But once active, I came to realize, that although I may not need help at the time, I was able to reach out and  help others in need. Back in the day, before stoma therapists, I use to visit new patients in the hospital or homes ... While professionals are great, it is also good to be able to speak with people with personal experience. I was a free member for awhile, but after writing often, I was given free months. I then started paying, and decided to just take lifetime membership. After all, I was going to have my ostomy for the rest of my life. I'm one of those people who can disappear for a few months at a time, but I'm always glad that the site is here, I can return and reconnect with old friends, and make new ones. This is an excellent site ... Best regards to all ... and Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Most people with ileostomies use drainable bags. But there's a lady on YouTube who uses closed-end bags for her own reasons.

I have a colostomy and use closed-end bags. I bag them up and put them in the trash. We buy "t-shirt" bags (they come in a box of like 1,000 bags) from Sam's or Costco. I bag up every bag, and it goes to the outside trash can, which is lined with a heavy-duty trash bag.

G-Day xxxltd,

If you have a drainable pouch, it's as easy as opening the end and dumping out the contents. Then just add a 1/2 cupful of water into the bag, close it up again, and swish it around in the bag. Now open it again and empty it, then clean the opening and close it up.

Put the old bag in a plastic bag, seal it up, and put it into the trash. All done and on your way, my friend.

Have a good day. IGGIE

In an ideal world, you would still empty the pouch if possible, as a used full pouch going in your own bin will get very smelly. You could use a nappy/diaper trash bin to put your used full pouch in, as it might stop the smell. If you're away from home, it's not a problem, as it's not your bin that will smell. Lol.

On change day, I rinse my drainable bag out before removing it and putting it in the trash can (yes, in a trash bag first). No way, I'd put a bag in the can with any amount of output in it. By trash day, I'm guessing it would really stink. 🤢😷

When I was in the hospital the last time, a young guy used to come into the room to clean up. He used to put a small plastic bag with adhesive on it to stick to the side bed table. I asked him if I could get some. The next day, he walked in with a box of 1,000 bags. I change twice a week, so I have enough for the next 9 years.

I use Hollister, so they supply gray bags for disposal. At home, I put the bag directly outside in the waste container when I change my system, and if I'm out, in the trash can. It depends on where you are.

Thank you one and all. I probably should have explained more; my question is directed to when I am away from home. Since I am too tall to sit on the toilet and drain, I think it is best to just stay with my flushable bag that I can use while standing. Thanks to everyone who replied. Terry

Not all Hollister bags come with the gray trash bags.

Hi friends, It's been a while since I've been on, and this post caught my eye! 60 years ago, "disposable" pouches lasted (on) for about an hour. One had to buy a rubber pouch, plastic face plate, rubber rings, and a metal clasp to hold it all together, etc. and then use glue to paste it on the skin. For convenience, I/we owned two sets until they wore out. Fast forward about 15 years... I remember the first "disposable" pouches, meant to be worn for a few days or a week, as long as you could get out of it. What a miracle! No odors. No rubber. Easy to change. I never gave "disposing" of it a thought! I emptied, changed, and wrapped it up, as I would a baby's pampers. No muss, no fuss. In all my 60 years, I've lived "on the edge," often being out and about, without ever carrying a spare. But I always keep a roll of tape handy, in my car or purse. I've traveled the world, and only once had to change on a long plane ride. Napping sitting up was the real issue. Have to be careful with the seatbelt. My only other issue (changing) was when in Israel... no one told me that going in the salt-laden Dead Sea would cause my pouch to "rip off." In the dressing room, I pulled down my bathing suit and off came the pouch. The place was so busy that no one noticed the pouchless me slide into a shower, wash off, clean my pouch, and tape it back on (no adhesive). I'd like to say that I don't live on the "edge" anymore, but in reality, I get up, empty, wash, brush my hair and teeth, and am out the door, with rarely a thought about "what ifs." Perhaps it was wanting to fit in as a "fearless" teenager that made all that I don't worry about possible. Best advice, find what works best for you, and do it. Regards to all!
