Went to see my GP yesterday, the idea was to find out if he knew of a better specialty than a GI surgeon to deal with my abscess. The answer was that he wasn’t sure. On the 26th of this month I have an appointment with me GI surgeon so the question will be asked there.
I think I have made the decision to have the abscess surgically removed, but I do not want the remaining rectal stump removed at this time. The problem is that after the last round of surgery the wounds rotted and I don’t want to risk this again, especially with wounds on me bum!!
The way it works I think is that they will open me belly up to access the abscess and then the plastics surgeon will open up my right leg from the knee up to the thigh. This will allow them to remove a muscle from the leg and place it in the pelvis, filling the void left from removing the abscess. If this all goes to plan I should only have two cuts, one on me belly and the other on me leg. This would be much easier to deal with if either one should decide to rot again. The problem is I’m diabetic and things take soo much longer to heal and because of the reduce blood flow in me skin the risk of infection etc. is a lot higher.
I think the time has come to bite the bullet and get this taken care of. The abscess has been draining for three years now, so there’s little possibility it will heal up on its own now. It is also wrecking my life, making me tiered and lethargic most of the time. I want to start enjoying life again. I can quite happily deal with the stoma on a day to day basis and so long as my general pain is under control I feel I can start trying to get back to normal. Not that I am well scared of the surgery, but it’s a risk I think it’s time to take. Wish me luck and I’ll update this blog after me visit to the GI surgeon.
