I KEEP IT IN A LITTLE ROUND GLASS BOWL in my bathroom with a dipping tool for convenient use whenever I feel that I need a little of the magic white powder. No, not cocaine. It’s baking soda, aka sodium bicarbonate, a wondrous, multiuse item that we can all benefit from daily. I stopped spending money for expensive ostomy deodorizers a long time ago. Baking soda does a better job, and it’s cheap to boot. It doesn’t mask odors; it eliminates them by neutralizing the smell. That’s why your mom always kept a small yellow box of it opened in the refrigerator. It can be used in smelly shoes or anywhere there is unwanted odors. There is a secondary health reason that I use it in the form of sodium bicarb pills because it slows the progression of chronic kidney disease. My CKD has been stable for the past couple of decades. There are multiple other household related uses for baking soda. It can be used as a whitening agent for laundering or teeth brushing, a kitchen/bathroom cleanser, a carpet stain remover (with vinegar), a pesticide remover (with water) from fruits & veggies, a silverware polisher, a scorched pot cleaner, and an oil/grease fire extinguisher. Magic white powder, indeed.
