Ostomy Memories of Magic White Powder

I KEEP IT IN A LITTLE ROUND GLASS BOWL in my bathroom with a dipping tool for convenient use whenever I feel that I need a little of the magic white powder.  No, not cocaine.  It’s baking soda, aka sodium bicarbonate, a wondrous, multiuse item that we can all benefit from daily.  I stopped spending money for expensive ostomy deodorizers a long time ago.  Baking soda does a better job, and it’s cheap to boot.  It doesn’t mask odors; it eliminates them by neutralizing the smell.  That’s why your mom always kept a small yellow box of it opened in the refrigerator.  It can be used in smelly shoes or anywhere there is unwanted odors.  There is a secondary health reason that I use it in the form of sodium bicarb pills because it slows the progression of chronic kidney disease.  My CKD has been stable for the past couple of decades.  There are multiple other household related uses for baking soda.  It can be used as a whitening agent for laundering or teeth brushing, a kitchen/bathroom cleanser, a carpet stain remover (with vinegar), a pesticide remover (with water) from fruits & veggies, a silverware polisher, a scorched pot cleaner, and an oil/grease fire extinguisher.  Magic white powder, indeed.

Henry, what do you do when you're out? I would imagine it would be challenging to use a box of baking soda and a small spoon while in a bathroom stall. Are there any convenient baking soda based drops?

Good question.  In reality, I don't bother to keep any with me when out and about.  But if I was going to try to carry some baking soda on me, it occurs to me that a perfect container might be something like one of those cigar tubes that I could just stick in my shirt pocket.  I'm not aware of a liquid form of baking soda.

I did find this via Google.  Twelve fluid ozs and lemon scented!

How do you use it? What's the process?

Just put little amounts in Saran Wrap and twist them up. Then, just carry 20-30 with you and open one up and drop the stuff in. Just don't let a cop see ya doing it.

RE baking soda:  I just use one of my flat pouch clamps to dip some into the pouch after I've emptied it.

Sodium bicarbonate pills! I take them by mouth but it's the same just in pill form I think. If it's too much cut it in half.

I wouldn't put this in my ostomy bag.

One capsule has 650 mg. They're sold as antacid. How many do you take a day.

Hi Henry,

So how do you use the BS to eliminate odors? Put the powder in your colostomy bag or?

Yes, I don't understand either! How much do use in your pouch? And when you reference to taking pill form are you talking about Tums?

Hi...

Curious to know, do you put it in the stoma bag or down the loo? What do you do with the sodium bicarb?

Thanks x
