Hi, I was just wondering if any ladies' menstrual cycles were thrown off after their surgery? I got my period for 2 days when I was 3 days post-op, and I was supposed to get it again 2 weeks ago, but nothing. I went to the doctor and got a couple of pregnancy tests, and all were negative. I haven't had sex since 1 week before the surgery, so I doubted if I would be pregnant in the first place. Before the surgery, my period was very normal and never more than 2 days late.

Hi! Did your GI system take a little while to wake up by any chance? It's hard for me to remember a lot of details in the month leading up to my first surgery... I had my period when I went in for my second surgery because I remember calling to ask if that would affect anything. It stopped immediately after the surgery in November, and by the end of January, I think I had begun flipping out and taking pregnancy tests. But I had an ileus after that one, so I think my motility Dr. is right about the electrical signals that tell your body to ovulate and start a period getting interrupted, like the GI system can be interrupted. Not one Dr. including my ob-gyn was alarmed that it took a little while to get back on track.

Hi gang,

I was thinking what a great resource this site has been for me since I found it. It would have been really helpful, but maybe a bit scary, to have found it before my ostomy, but that's water under the bridge. But I got thinking about it, and now I'm questioning why doctors and hospitals don't provide this site's contact info to any patient even considering an ostomy today. And how can we change that so potential ostomates can learn about the road ahead for them by getting on here and asking questions before the docs go chop-chop. How exactly do you get all hospitals to provide their patients specific information, like this website?

I just happened to find this site something like 4 years after my ostomy when I Googled "ostomy forum" or something like that. But I never found it during previous searches.....so I found this site pretty much by pure luck. We need to find a way to make this site available to new or soon-to-be ostomates......as that's when we really need to commiserate with fellow ostomates. Anybody have any thoughts on how we do this?

Thanks,

Bob

It took 3 months after for me to get mine back on track. When your body goes through a lot, it can mess with your cycle. I had a long hospital stay, but once I started up again, all the doctor said was it was a good sign my body was finally healing. And I've been back to normal for the last 3 years and have a permanent ostomy.

I'm not 100% sure, but the surgeon said everything was fine. The output started flowing right away, but slowed down after a couple of days because I refused to eat anything since the pain made me super nauseous. But once I did start eating again, output and gas started back up, and the nurses said everything looked healthy and normal. I have a follow-up appointment with my surgeon in a week or so; I'll be sure to ask him some more questions about it.

I had an emergency ileostomy due to C. diff in January 2021 and have not had my period since.
