I had surgery 7 years ago. Up until 2 weeks ago it was liquid. No one knows why. Including my ostomy nurse. Has anyone else had this problem. If so what did you do?

I sorry to hear that you are having issues with your stoma. I'm unable to help because I have a Urostomy, I sure somebody that has an ileostomy or colostomy will be able to help you depending on what you have.

Best of luck

Nervous but excited about tomorrow. I have been reading some of the threads here and am brand new to the site. I am grateful to have had the ileostomy so my body had a chance to heal but am truly hoping all goes well with the operation and future.

I have a collapsed disk in my back and sleeping on it for the past 7 months because of the bag has caused me constant daily excruciating pain. I haven't slept through the night and have had so many accidents.

I am so glad I found this site. Gained so much information so I am much better prepared for what happens post operation and what worked for people diet and supplement (fiber) wise. Thank you for that.

To be clear: For 7 years, your output was liquid. And now it's something else?

Over eight years, I have had the same changes, but it's not a problem.

3-year ileostomy here - for the most part, almost always just liquid although the surgeon commented early on that output should be the consistency of oatmeal… sorry oatmeal lovers for this description.

In case you didn't know, I became an ostomy nurse in 2001 and received my permanent ileostomy in 2009.

For an ileostomy, effluvia is considered normal if it is thinner than toothpaste. My output varies from (rarely) playdough consistency (not healthy for ileostomy) to poop soup (aka brown water full of acid and digestive enzymes).

If you want me to help with specifics, message me with your med list, typical diet including fluids, and any other significant medical diagnoses you may have.

I will never eat oatmeal again.

Thanks for this info and a special thanks for adding effluvia to my vocab… although I will probably only remember it for about 15 minutes.  JB
