Has anyone had a stoma put back after diverticulitis perforation and sepsis?

Hi Nonnie. My name is Barry, I'm close to you in Ormond. I had a perforation and infection last summer, originally planned for reversal in December, but the surgeon wanted me to get a colonoscopy and surgery the next day. The GI called and moved up my colonoscopy date without informing the surgeon, so it didn't happen. Now I'm scheduled for March 21 and 22 and will not change if offered. I came across this site in November, lots of knowledgeable and compassionate people. Some people have lots of trouble with reversal, and some recover quickly. I have a colostomy; life is more challenging for those with ileostomies. I expressed my concerns to Dr. Grove at Advent on Williamson Blvd. He's going to do laparoscopic surgery and told me since I only lost 8 inches or so of colon, he believes I won't have a long drawn-out recovery. Fingers are crossed and prayers are being said. A lot depends on your own anatomy and situation. You can learn a lot here, but be prepared and ask lots of questions when the time comes. Good luck, 57 is young; I wish you many years without a stoma.

Meetanostomate has been a great avenue and resource to meet new people with the same challenges, fall in love, fall out of love but most of all fall out of loneliness that comes with self-doubt…

Hello, I had a takedown on January 30, 2024, after having a stoma for 8 months. I had peritonitis and sepsis after a botched flexible sigmoidoscopy in May 2023 perforated my colon… I had emergency surgery, woke with a colostomy, and spent 21 days in the hospital. I got a large hernia a few months later. My takedown went great; I think because I didn't have any other issues, just a botched procedure. They removed all of my sigmoid colon, but I seem to function pretty normally. I wish you the best!

Yes, I had exactly the same as you did: diverticulitis perforation and sepsis. I had the stoma for about 7 months and it was reversed about 6 months ago. All is good for me; things went back to normal pretty quickly. Good luck.
